The Pyrenees (Spain, France and Andorra)

[[toc] ]

The pyrenees are a range of mountains which make a natural border between France and Spain. They are located in France, Spain and also Andorra. They are about 430 kilometres long from the Bay of Viscai to the Mediterranean sea.

The eastern part of the Pyrenees consists largely of granite and gneissosse rocks, while in the western part the granite peaks are flanked by layers of limestone. The massive and unworn character of the chain cames from its abundance of granite, which is particularly resistant to erosion, as well as weak glacial development.

The amount of the precipitation the range recives, including rain and snow, is much greater in the western than in the eastern Pyrenees, because of the moist air that blows in from the atlantic ocean over the Bay of Viscai. After dropping its moisture over the western and central Pyrenees, the air is usually dry over the eastern pyrenees. The winter average temperature is -2º.

Some glaciers are found in the western and specially the snowy central Pyrenees, but the eastern Pyrenees are without any glaciers - with the quantity of snow falling there being insufficient to cause their developement. The glaciers are confine to the northern slopes of the central Pyrenees, and do not descend far down into the valley, but have their greatest lengths along the direction of the mountain chain. They form, in fact, in a narrow zone near the crest of the highest mountains.

In the Pyrenees we have the most representative zones of this ecosystem where the forest formation are so representative: black pine, fir, wild pine, birch and beech. The bearded vulture is the most representative bird of the natural parks of the Pyrenees. Live in vertical walls of mountain, found cornice, caves and cracks for breeding. Its fauna river is very extensive emphasizing the common trout, the rainbow trout, the common toad, newt from the Pyrenees, red frog. In the rivers and streams lives the desman of the Pyrenees, although it is difficult to see because is a nocturn animal and the otter eats them.

How does this work?

First, I have to "invite you" to be an author of this blog?

How can you be invited?

You have to create a gmail mail address, in www.google.es, Gmail. Then you have to tell me which is your gmail address in class. Later I will include you in this blog. After that you will be able to publish your comments.

I will check everything you write before anyone else can see it, so that noone can make a bad use of this blog.

Hello, student!

Welcome to the Natural Science blog of the Second Year course 2009-2010 in IES Parque de Lisboa.

Here you will be able to show the result of your works in a new funny way. And if you tell your friends and family the URL of this blog, they will see your works too!

But remember to write your name in every contribution you make, and if you are working in groups, the name of all the members of the team. Don´t forget anyone.

This is the first time in my life I write a blog with my students. So please, be patience if at the beginning not everything works as well as it should. New technologies can be very usefull, but it takes some time to get used to them. We are going to learn together.

You can ask me all your doubts through the blog, or when you see me in class, as usual.

See you soon.
